OpenNebula on VMware

This Cloud TechDay is a half-day educational and networking event to learn how to build and operate OpenNebula clouds on top of VMware.

OpenNebula is intended for companies willing to create a self-service cloud environment on top of their VMware infrastructure without having to abandon their investment in VMware and retool the entire stack. OpenNebula exposes a multi-tenant, cloud-like provisioning layer on top of vCenter, including features like virtual data centers, data center federation or hybrid cloud computing to connect in-house vCenter infrastructures with public clouds.

OpenNebula seamlessly integrates with existing vCenter infrastructures to leverage advanced features -such as vMotion, HA or DRS scheduling- provided by the VMware vSphere product family. OpenNebula does not interfere in existing VMware procedures and workflows. Resources like VM, VM templates, datastores and networks can be easily imported from vCenter infrastructures to OpenNebula.

Join our technical experts from OpenNebula by OpenNebula Systems for a hands-on workshop on cloud installation and operation. You’ll get a comprehensive overview of OpenNebula and will be equipped with the skills to take this back to your company and implement right away.

9:30-11:30: Hands-on Workshop

TBD, TBD This is a beginner level tutorial designed to introduce IT professionals to OpenNebula. The course covers the process of installing, configuring and operating enterprise clouds and virtualized data centers using OpenNebula on top of VMware. This course helps anyone who wants to set up a small scale OpenNebula test environment to gain experience working with OpenNebula. Participants will be able to learn cloud architecture design, planning and installation, a general understanding of technical and business capabilities of an OpenNebula cloud, and basic configuration and usage of its main components.

Methodology

This is an interactive course, where the attendees operate on their own labs with an OpenNebula on VMware cloud, which are provided during the course. OpenNebula provides an abstraction layer on top of the infrastructure and technologies deployed in the datacenter.

Contents

  • An Introduction to Cloud Computing
  • The Architecture of the Cloud
  • Importing Resources: Datastores & Images
  • Importing Resources: Virtual Networks
  • Importing Resources: Wild VMs
  • Import, Configure and Instance VM Templates

Hands-on Labs

Attendees are grouped into groups of two or three people. Each group receives a lab, consisting of one OpenNebula frontend node, accessible through SSH. Attendees are the owners and administrators of their labs. They are able to launch virtual machine, make any configuration changes, debug any problems, access the GUI and the CLI.

Audience

The target audience is devops and system administrators interested in deploying a private cloud solution, or in the integration of OpenNebula with other platform.

Prerequisites

No prior OpenNebula skills are required, but participants should have working knowledge of VMware, networking and Unix/Linux systems.

Material

The instructor will rely on a set of PDF documents that will be explained throughout the course. These documents will be made available to the attendees right at the very beginning of the course. Attendees need a laptop to connect to their hands-on labs.
